The Best Ski Resorts in the US and Canada: 2023 Readers’ Choice Awards
For our 36th annual Readers’ Choice Awards, voters weighed in on their favorite ski resorts in North America. Colorado resorts once again dominated the list of US ski resorts this year, with three of the four mountains at Aspen Snowmass making the top 10. But the East Coast made a bold statement with 10 resorts in our top 40. And in an age of resort conglomerates, a handful of indie ski areas stood out for their homegrown spirit and excellent terrain. From Aspen to Alberta, Big Sky to B.C., these ski resorts were picked by our readers as the best in North America for their trails, lifts, and après-ski spots. Whether you’re a moguls expert, a terrain park shredder, or a novice still mastering blue runs, these ski resorts ticked all your boxes.

White Pass is just off-the-beaten-path enough (12 miles from Mt. Rainier National Park and 50 miles from the city of Yakima) to maintain a low-key, local’s secret vibe. With an average snowfall of 300 inches and more than 1,400 acres of varied terrain, plus views of majestic Mt. Rainier, it’s truly a gem. Beginners can cruise groomers in Paradise Basin while more advanced skiers and riders can shred the steeps off the West Ridge. There’s also night skiing, snow tubing, and a great Nordic Center with 16 miles of trails for cross-country skiing, skate skiing, snowshoeing, and fat biking.
Where to stay: For easy access to the slopes, the White Pass Village Inn is located at the 4,500 foot summit and its 55 condos have kitchenettes and either a deck or balcony and guests have access to the outdoor heated pool. That prime location comes with a sacrifice: WiFi. RV owners can reserve one of 83 slope-side sites in Lot C of the resort. If you don’t mind a drive, Yakima is just over one hour away and has more amenity-rich lodging options, like the Hotel Maison Yakima Tapestry Collection by Hilton.

Just over 50 miles east of Bellingham, this rare indie ski resort is full of soul. You don’t come for a glitzy après scene, alpine coasters, or five-star resorts (they don’t exist here), you come on a singular mission: to ski epic terrain. If you’re a powder hound, Baker should be on your radar. The mountain averages the most snow of any ski resort in the world and holds the world record for receiving the most snow in a season (1,140 inches in 1998-1999). There’s terrain suited to all abilities, from relaxed runs off Chairs 2, 3, and 4, to serious steeps off Chairs 1 and 5, and endless glades off Chair 6.
Where to stay: Set within Snoqualmie National Forest, there’s no lodging at the base areas but RVs and campers can overnight in designated areas. The Chrysalis Inn and Spa Bellingham, Curio Collection by Hilton, is one near the slopes.

Nestled among the trees in the majestic Martis Valley in North Lake Tahoe, Northstar is a favorite of Bay Area families, who come for the beginner and intermediate-friendly terrain and upscale lodging. An average annual snowfall of more than 350 inches, plus a sheltered backside that can still be skied when winds shut down higher-elevation resorts in the area, make this one of Tahoe’s more reliable resorts when it comes to snow conditions. Tricksters can take advantage of more than a half-dozen terrain parks and half pipes. Every Friday through Sunday, plan to head to the East Ridge Trail by 1:30pm to line-up for a glass of complimentary bubbly at Tahoe’s only ski-up, mountain-view champagne bar, Tost.
Where to stay: Located mid-mountain, the Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe is hands-down the prime luxury stay with its ski-up barbecue station, 17,000 square-foot slopeside spa and excellent kids programming.

Located in the Selkirk Mountains, Schweitzer offers 2,900 acres of some of the best skiing in the Pacific Northwest. Named for a Swiss hermit who lived at the base of the mountain more than a century ago, this family-friendly resort no longer flies under the radar. Improvements including a new boutique hotel, lift enhancements, and a 3,600-square-foot spa set to debut in the base area this winter, have started to attract attention. But the slopes still feel uncrowded compared to bigger name resorts. And you can’t beat the tree skiing here. The town of Sandpoint is just 11 miles away and a free shuttle makes it easy to drop in to dine at spots like Fat Pig Bistro and Utara Brewing Company. Even if you don’t ski, buy a foot-passenger ticket and lunch at Sky House, where you can enjoy 360-degree views that take in three states, plus Canada and Lake Pend Oreille.
Where to stay: The resort welcomed its first boutique hotel, Humbird, last season. The ski-in/ski-out property has 31 rooms appointed with thoughtful touches like boot dryers and binoculars to ogle the mountain views. Take advantage of the 12-person hot tub on the third floor deck.

Chloe Jimenez/Alta Ski Area41. Alta, Utah
This skier-only resort in Little Cottonwood Canyon cemented its reputation as a powder mecca last season, receiving 903 inches of snow—the most significant dump in the resort’s 85 year history. The average annual snowfall—546 inches—is still impressive. Skiers can test their mettle on Alf’s High Rustler, a top-to-bar run that spits you out at the deck of Goldminer’s Daughter for après ski. And if you’re 80 years or older and still schussing down the slopes, you’ve earned the privilege to ski for free here. This season, the resort will require parking reservations on Fridays, weekends, and holidays, so plan ahead.
Where to stay: Conveniently located at the base, the ski-in/ski-out Alta Lodge has saunas, heated pools facing the famous ski run High Rustler, and a sundeck with mountain views. Snowpine Lodge has rooms ranging from dorms to a two-bedroom penthouse, plus a fantastic spa and restaurant.

Located just over 75 miles northeast of Seattle, Stevens Pass may be small, but its 1,100 acres offer a little of everything from moguls and a terrain park to off-piste adventures and night skiing. Vail Resorts purchased the ski hill last spring and has already introduced improvements: new this season, Kehr’s Chair has been upgraded to a fixed-grip quad. Three wilderness areas across the highway from the resort are a backcountry playground (just be sure to have avalanche safety equipment and backcountry safety knowledge). At day’s end hit up the Bull’s Tooth pub in Granite Peaks Lodge for happy hour microbrews.
Where to stay: Adventure-minded boutique hotel group LOGE Camps has two properties 30 minutes away in the Bavarian-themed town of Leavenworth; one downtown and one riverside. Choose from cabins or central digs with a beer garden and gear rentals.

The name says it all. Mammoth is big, boasting 3,500 skiable acres and the highest summit elevation in California. An excellent blend of beginner and advanced terrain, plus 10 parks with two half pipes and more than 50 jumps, makes it a great mountain to work skills progression. With one of the longest seasons in North America, Mammoth serves as spring training ground for many pro skiers and riders and it’s not unusual for diehards to score runs into July. Daily service from San Francisco and Denver to Bishop on United Airlines makes the mountain easier than ever to reach.
Where to stay: Nestled on the shores of Twin Lake, historic Tamarack Lodge exudes California craftsman style and guests can snowshoe or cross-country ski straight out the door. The all-suite Westin Monache Resort has a heated outdoor pool. The historic Sierra Nevada Resort is now Outbound Mammoth, and Limelight Hotels is slated to open a property here in 2024.

Christian Ridings/Purgatory Resort38. Purgatory at Durango Mountain, Colorado
Surrounded by the rugged peaks of the San Juan Mountains, this Southwest Colorado resort, 25 miles north of Durango, is a unique blend of steep tree skiing and wide-open cruisers free of the I-70 corridor crowds. Families love perks like free skiing for all kids ages 12 and younger, and on-mountain activities like the mountain coaster and snow tubing. Experienced skiers and riders can take advantage of Purgatory Snowcat Adventures, Colorado’s largest cat skiing operation with access to over 35,000 acres of guided backcountry terrain. And non-skiers can enjoy snowcat dinners and tours. Beyond the slopes, take a guided snowshoe tour, visit the Nordic Center, or relax and rejuvenate at the newly reimagined Durango Hot Springs, just 10 minutes south of Purgatory on the San Juan Skyway.
Where to stay: Located at the base of Lift 1, Purgatory Resort Lodge has 2, 3, and 4-bedroom condos. Guests have access to the private Durango Mountain Club’s amenities, including a family game room, private dining room and bar, and a heated outdoor pool and hot tub. Top floor, two-story units, known as The Pinnacle, come with a private concierge.
Stats: 1,605 acres of skiable terrain, 107 trails, 11 lifts, four terrain parks, and a vertical drop of 2,029 feet. One-day lift tickets range from $29 to $159.
Snowbird Ski Resort37. Snowbird, Utah
If great snow and challenging terrain are your top priorities, Snowbird is your dream mountain. Nearly three quarters of the mountain is covered in expert and intermediate runs, and Utah’s famed dry snow consistently averages more than 400 inches a year. You can get off-piste with Snowbird Mountain Guides and Powderbird’s guided helicopter and snowcat adventures. Families will love the new Kids Freeloader Pass program, which gives anyone ages 18 and under a free season pass when linked to an adult pass. If you want a social scene, head to Park City. Snowbird’s amenities are limited, but there are some gems like retro-inspired SeventyOne and the Aerie, a gastropub with a serious wine list located at the Cliff Lodge. After recent upgrades, the resort now produces nearly 100 percent of its power on-site, making it one of the greenest ski resorts in North America.
Where to stay: The ski in-/ski-out Cliff Lodge has a rooftop pool and hot tub.

Three peaks and the highest vertical in the East at 3,430 feet make up Whiteface Mountain, which offers over 22 miles of skiing in the Adirondacks, just outside of the village of Lake Placid. The resort played host to the 1980 Winter Olympics, and you can still ride or ski those trails all the way from the summit to the base. There’s also the 2.1-mile Wilmington Trail on Lookout Mountain for a choice, quad-burning descent. In recent years, the resort has made major investments in snowmaking and its lift infrastructure. The newest enhancement: a new Doppelmayr quad, The Notch, that connects Bear Den Learning Center to the Legacy Lodge at mid-mountain.
Where to stay: Whiteface Lodge offers luxury cabin vibes, the new Peak 47 dining lounge, and new high-intensity, therapeutic wellness treatments at the spa.

Winter Park35. Winter Park, Colorado
The longest continually operating resort in Colorado, Winter Park is a Rocky Mountain favorite for its varied terrain and consistent snowfall (more than 352 inches a year). It’s also one of Colorado’s most accessible mountains. Located just 67 miles west of Denver, it’s an easy drive from the airport. A brand new six-person lift serving nearly 300 acres of terrain debuts this year in the Vasquez Ridge area of the mountain. And four new on-mountain dining outposts will feed hungry skiers and riders easy-to-eat, on-the-go bites, so they can quickly get back to making turns.
Where to stay: Zephyr Mountain Lodge has studios, 1, 2, and 3-bedroom condos with full kitchens. In town, Gravity Haus Winter Park offers co-working spaces as well as a gear demos and rentals. Newcomer A-Frame Club is an Instagram-sensation with its 31 A-Frame cabins and historic saloon.

Hard-core skiers who live for hike-to terrain and super steeps have always been fans of Taos Ski Valley. But recent resort investments, including a revitalized base area with an ice-skating rink, and improvements to beginner and intermediate terrain have made this New Mexico mountain destination way more family-friendly. Taos Ski Valley leans in to sustainability, equity, and inclusivity as the only ski resort in the world to be B-Corp certified, and one of a few to be Certified CarbonNeutral®. The challenging terrain of Kachina Peak and the moguls of Al’s Run are the big draw for experts. For dining, the Bavarian is an institution known for its brats and German beers. Down days are far from dull thanks to surrounding cultural attractions including the Taos Pueblo UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Where to stay: Located adjacent to Lift 1, the Blake Properties comprising 115 hotel rooms, suites, and penthouses, and 24 condos blends rustic European architecture with New Mexican design touches including original Georgia O’Keeffe art.

With nearly 5,000 acres of diverse terrain, Heavenly offers the best of both California and Nevada terrain including wide-open cruisers and 1,600-foot chutes. Sparkling Lake Tahoe views, plus an average of 300 days of sunshine a year, make Heavenly a dream getaway for East Coasters. The unique Skyline Trail is a must-do run, taking in majestic mountain landscapes, flat valleys, and lake panoramas. Plus, the Heavenly Village is located in the heart of South Lake Tahoe, surrounded by snow-based activities, restaurants, and fun events throughout the winter season. If the views of Lake Tahoe inspire you on the slopes, a trip to the shore is just minutes away.

Spanning six peaks and nearly 3,000 acres in the Yampa Valley, Steamboat is revered for its tree skiing, trademarked Champagne Powder snow, and family-friendly amenities. But many folks keep coming back for its deep Western roots and a down-home vibe that extends from the mountain to the town. A multiyear, multimillion-dollar redevelopment has reimagined Steamboat’s base area with a new on-snow gondola entrance and escalators from the resort entrance, an ice rink, and a food hall. Last year, the resort introduced a new terrain-based learning area for beginners. This season, the Mahogany Ridge and Fish Creek Canyon expansion will provide experienced riders and skiers 655 new acres of challenging terrain.
Where to stay: The Steamboat Grand offers a massive heated pool and hot tubs, while the ski-in/ski-out Sheraton Steamboat Resort Villas are conveniently located next to Christie Peak Express. GravityHaus recently renovated the former slope-side Ptarmigan Inn with its signature sustainable touches, plus a new fitness center and restaurant.

A winter haven for East Coasters, this Poconos resort’s snow-making capacity could cover the George Washington Bridge with one foot of snow in 24 hours. The mountain’s 900-foot vertical drop is great training before venturing to bigger mountains in the West. More than half of the mountain, however, is covered in beginner-friendly greens. Families love the amenities, including one of the country’s largest snow-tubing park, an indoor water park, and a plethora of dining options including ski-in/ski-out Trail’s End Pub & Grille, known for its nachos, buffalo wings, Philly-style sandwiches, hot pretzels, craft beer, and cocktails.
Where to stay: Camelback Lodge, the only ski-in/ski out resort in the Poconos, recently refurbished 453 guest rooms that come in 16 different configurations including bunk rooms and a suite that can sleep up to 14 guests.

Stowe’s 485 acres are loaded with mostly intermediate terrain, though there’s some variety of runs for everyone else, including easy greens and double black diamonds—which make it an all-around favorite for East Coasters. Stowe’s two peaks, Spruce and Mount Mansfield, are also easy to jump across with a connecting lift, which means even more options before ending the day in one of Vermont’s most picturesque ski towns.
Where to stay: The quirky, authentically Austrian Trapp Family Lodge (yes, owned by the actual Von Trapp family of the Sound of Music), where the hills are really alive with the resort’s own backcountry and cross-country ski trails. Stowe Field Guide Lodge from Lark Hotels has a great location in the heart of downtown.

If measured by skiable terrain, Mt. Bachelor is the sixth largest ski area in North America, with over 4,300 acres of lift-accessed skiing. It may lack the amenities of some of the bigger players (it will welcome its first high-speed, six pack lift this season), but perhaps for that very reason, it doesn’t get the crowds. Mt. Bachelor stands out for its great spring skiing and unique terrain that allows you to ski 360-degrees around the dormant volcano. If you want great shopping and dining, you’ll find it just 20 minutes away in the artsy town of Bend. And with 11 direct flights from cities including San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Seattle, it’s more accessible than ever.
Where to stay: If you’re on a budget and want effortless first tracks and DIY après, you can reserve an RV spot right at the resort. The eco-friendly Oxford Hotel has a prime location in the heart of downtown Bend.

Located in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, “the Cat” has long been considered the most scenic resort in the East. Home to over 2,100 feet of vertical directly facing Mount Washington, its runs promise skiers with sharp edges and an adventurous spirit a truly unforgettable alpine experience. In addition to breathtaking views and thrilling skiing and riding, the resort also hosts one of the most vibrant tailgating parties in its legendary C Lot. Recent improvements to the snowmaking systems, including 18 new snow guns, will help ensure tip-top conditions.
Where to stay: The 68-room Glen House hotel is the closest accommodation to Wildcat and features amenities like a heated indoor saltwater pool.

Thanks to its easy access from Denver, Keystone is one of Colorado’s most family-friendly resorts, with a Kids Ski Free program and complimentary red wagons to tote your tikes and their gear to and from the parking area to the slopes. The terrain, however, isn’t just for kids. With three mountains and five above-tree-line bowls Keystone is a winter playground for all-levels of skiers and riders. The newly expanded Timber Ridge Lodge on North Peak offers a cushy base to rest and refuel. Keyston is also one of the state’s few resorts that offers night skiing. The action goes beyond schussing down the slopes. Families love the variety of activities offered: snow tubing, sleigh rides, ice skating, and cross-country skiing at the Keystone Nordic Center.
Where to stay: Founded as an 1800s stagecoach stop, Ski Tip Lodge remains one of the ski industry’s most historical buildings. The charming B&B is known for its excellent food and intimate fireside après scene. Keystone Lodge & Spa has easy access to the slopes, a heated outdoor pool, three on-site eateries, daily happy hours, and complementary s’mores kits.

Sunday River26. Sunday River, Maine
Exceptional snowmaking and grooming operations allow Sunday River to be one of the earliest mountains to open in the East (and sometimes in North America) and the resort has been known to remain open into early May. With eight peaks spanning over three miles wide, there’s fantastic terrain for everyone from beginners to experts. Even West Coast ski snobs will be impressed by the glades on Oz and Aurora, which are considered some of the best the East has to offer.
Where to Stay: The Grand Summit and the Jordan Hotel are two excellent slopeside stays; the latter has an excellent spa. The Snow Cap Inn is a comfy, budget-friendly option in the heart of town just a shuttle-ride away from the base of the resort.

With an average annual snowfall of 450 inches and 300 sunny days, Palisades Tahoe— formerly known as Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows—is considered the Spring Skiing Capital of the U.S., with corn snow well into July in good years. Two sprawling ski areas, Olympic Valley and Alpine Meadows, are connected via a 15-minute shuttle, encompassing 6,000 acres. Alpine Meadows is known for its crowd-free, hike-to back bowls and top-to-bottom groomers, while the steeply pitched vertical terrain of the Olympic Valley side is the stomping ground of hard-charging pros. Palisades Tahoe will make its return to the Men's World Cup circuit,welcoming back the Stifel Palisades Tahoe Cup for the second consecutive year on February 23-25, 2024. Base villages clearly cater to a food-loving crowd, with restaurants specializing in everything from banh mi to tacos.
Where to stay: The ski-in, ski-out Resort at Squaw Creek has spacious penthouses and three swimming pools.

Okemo eschews the rugged New England ski spirit and fully embraces a more pampered approach to skiing the Northeast, with heated seats and wind-proof orange bubbles on the Sunburst Six lift, farm-fresh restaurants, and DIY S’mores at the base. An excellent ski school, mellow terrain, impeccable grooming, and fun kids programs make Okemo a family favorite. With the highest snowmaking efficiency amongst all ski resorts in Vermont, conditions are almost always fantastic.
Where to stay: The Jackson Gore Inn at the Jackson Gore base area has 28 ski-in/ski-out rentals. Main + Mountain, a stylishly updated, 13-room motel in Ludlow, is just one mile from the ski area and has the town's best cocktail bar.

Big Sky Resort23. Big Sky, Montana
In 1973, Big Sky Resort opened with four lifts and less than 20 trails. Fifty years later, with 300+ trails spanning 38 lifts, Big Sky Resort is well, big. The first thing you register when you buckle in at Big Sky is the complete lack of crowds. Its 5,850 skiable acres add up to about an acre per skier on average, so it’s not uncommon to have an entire run to yourself. The mountain has the most consistent powder dumps in the Northern Rockies, which blanket 4,350 vertical feet from Lone Peak and more than 2,300 acres of beginner and intermediate slopes. Thanks to the Big Sky 2025 investment initiative, it also has some of the most technologically advanced chair lifts, including the new Lone Peak Tram, transporting skiers to the 11,166-foot summit. And now it’s easier than ever to get to nearby Bozeman, with nonstop flights from 19 U.S. cities.
Where to stay: The Summit Hotel in Mountain Village is steps from the resort’s base area and has a front-row seat for the morning alpenglow on Lone Mountain.The Montage Big Sky, the area’s first five-star resort is in the Spanish Peaks area boasts a massive spa, Northern Italian restaurant, and après-ski raclette cart. One&Only is slated to debut here in 2024.

The southwest Colorado resort is one of few in North America that really does offer wide-ranging terrain for every kind of skier and rider. Spanning 1,547 acres and topping out at an elevation of more than 12,000 feet, more than a third of Crested Butte's terrain is dedicated to beginner and intermediate skiing and riding—and the resort recently widened a few of the most popular green trails to give beginners more space to make turns. Meanwhile, nearly two thirds of that acreage is dedicated to insanely steep advanced and extreme terrain serviced by some of the best lifts in the country. A Ski with an Olympian program affords the opportunity to ski privately with one of the biggest icons in the skiing world, Wendy Fisher. Private lessons are limited to five people per session.

But Tremblant brings exactly what you what you wish for from a European-inspired ski resort in French-speaking Quebec: a pedestrian village with boutiques at the foot of the mountain, ski events like Tremblant’s 24h and the Tremblant World Cup, and Le P’tit Caribou, a rowdy après-ski hotspot with a lake-facing terrace and bars upon which people are known to dance until 3 a.m. Major snowmaking investments mean the slopes are guaranteed to be good. Le Shack is a definite must for après ski this winter, with a redesigned terrace featuring fireplaces and views of Place St. Bernard and the ski slopes.

Aptly nicknamed "The Big One," Jackson Hole Mountain Resort has some of the most challenging skiing in all of North America. Despite its deserved hard-core reputation, there are plenty of intermediate runs off the Bridger Gondola, and a new base area quad lift, Eagle’s Rest, whisks beginners to the two-year-old, mid-mountain Solitude Station Learning Center. Both Teton Village and the nearby town of Jackson offer a ton of honky tonk après-ski diversions (the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar is legendary) as well as seriously good dining options. The resort is a leader in on-snow experiences: This winter its specialized offerings include a Mindful Ski and Snowboard Camp for those who want to center themselves while exploring the mountain, as well as private tours with the legendary Tommy Moe, an Olympic skiing gold medalist. Women who want to learn with and from fellow female rippers should sign up for one of the resort’s Lady Shred Ski and Snowboard Camps. Be sure to take the tram up Rendezvous Mountain for see-forever views and a delicious selection of waffles at Corbet’s Cabin.

Its nearly 2,100 acres of terrain includes 44 acres of expert and advanced-level terrain around the new state-of-the-art Lift 9. Into heli-skiing? Telluride Helitrax can take you to more than 200 square miles of high alpine skiing. Or, grab the kids and shake things up with some snowbiking. A free, eight-mile pedestrian gondola eliminates the need for a vehicle, connecting the quaint mountain village and historic downtown in a 13-minute ride, while also providing ski access. Heated standalone gondola cabins and cozy yurts will provide extra al fresco dining areas throughout the resort. And getting here has never been easier. United Airlines introduced new direct flights to Montrose Airport (MTJ) this winter, and more daily direct flights to Telluride and Montrose were added last year.

The Beast of the East spans 3,000 acres in the Green Mountains, including lift access to the second highest peak in Vermont. In addition to its massive size, Killington holds the distinction of the longest season in the East, firing up its snow guns early—including new low-energy upgrades-- and keeping the lifts spinning on the man-made Superstar “glacier” some years into June. From endless cruisers such as Great Eastern, to legendary bump runs like Outer Limits, skiers and riders of all ability levels can find something to love. The expansive Woodward Mountain Terrain Park network offers ample options for freestyle fanatics. In addition to Killington’s six peaks, visitors can also explore near-by Pico Mountain on the same lift pass. This season, an all-new K-1 Base Lodge will welcome guests with next-level amenities. After the lifts close, Killington Road comes alive with après options such as the Wobbly Barn steakhouse, which turns into a nightclub.

And the new Hero’s terrain expansion—the first significant addition to Aspen Mountain since the opening of the Silver Queen Gondola in 1985—increases Aspen Mountain’s skiable acreage by more than 20 percent. A new, high speed quad chairlift will access the more than 150 acres of challenging new runs. Even hardcore locals score first tracks just so they can nab oatmeal pancakes at Bonnie’s, Aspen’s legendary mid-mountain eatery. For the hottest après-ski scenes, head to the Snow Lodge at the St. Regis, the sister of Montauk’s famed Surf Lodge, or the AspenX Beach Club.

If you think the East doesn’t have challenging terrain, test your mettle on the resort’s 750 acres of gladed terrain or the steeps of Madonna Mountain, the highest vertical drop in Northern Vermont at 2,610 feet (the ride to the summit affords some seriously stellar views). When your legs are shot, head to après at Black Bear Tavern in the Madonna Base Lodge for a pint of the resort’s signature Prohibition Ale, brewed by Long Trail Brewing Company. You’ll want a reservation to secure a table at newcomer Cast & Cut, where the menu features steakhouse classics and fresh seafood, like whole Thai sea bass.

The most expansive of Aspen Snowmass’s four mountains also has the most lift-served vertical feet of terrain in the U.S., with a 4,406-foot elevation drop and enough variation to make it an all-around hit with families. Investments in the Snowmass Base Village have turned it into a social hub complete with an ice-skating rink and great dining venues. An on-mountain dining options rival what you’d find in Europe. Sam’s transports skiers to the Italian Dolomites with a menu featuring rigatoni Bolognese and Negroni spritzes, while the new Alpin Room takes its cues from the Alps, with dishes such as schnitzel and tartiflette.
Where to stay: The former Westin underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation recently reopened as the Viewline Resort Snowmass, Autograph Collection, under Marriott’s Autograph Collection flag, while its sister property, Wildwood Snowmass, got a retro makeover, including a new beer hall. Located in the Base Village, the Limelight Snowmass is known for its lively après scene and boasts the state’s highest indoor climbing wall, while the Viceroy Snowmass the most luxe stay on the slopes, with a serious spa and a restaurant from star chef Richard Sandoval.
